It's important to learn how to identify insects in your garden, so that you don't accidentally kill the "good guys." This is a picture of a Soldier Beetle sent to us by one of our Backyard Gardeners. Soldier Beetle larvae are excellent predators, hunting down aphids, slugs and snails!

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE/FOOD SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS: *Appalachian Harvest: A food hub in Duffield VA where limited resource farmers bring their graded produce for distribution to secured retail markets. *Appalachian Farmers Market Association (AFMA): Created to promote farmers markets and provide training, tech support and educational conferences. * Rooted in Appalachia (RiA): Connects consumers with the farmers who are growing and raising their food. *Agro-Forestry: Teaches people about local forest foods like Ginseng, Shiitaki mushrooms, Goldenseal, ramps, paw paws and various other fruit and nut trees as sources of local food and ways to earn income by creating value added products.
