By Catherine Bush ~~ Trapped on Christmas Eve because her car slid off the icy Kentucky road, Eve Lawson, a cynic who refuses to believe in Santa Claus, finds herself in the home of Simon Peter Whitaker, a woodcarver and expert on Christmas, who is dressed as Santa. Believer and unbeliever find themselves clashing time and time again as old wounds struggle to be healed by the Love that is Christmas. Join us for an evening of humor, surprises and joy as written by one of Barter’s favorite authors.~~ In Repertory with The Santaland Diaries~~ Director's Notes CHRISTMAS MAGIC~~ This is the time of year when we look for flying reindeer, when we hook up twinkly lights against the darkening nights, when we focus our hearts towards the magical and the miraculous. But what do we mean when we talk about Christmas magic?~~ I was recently watching an interview with Derek DelGaudio, renowned magician, and, in it, he talks about what magic actually is to him. He shows a simple trick in which he puts a ball in his hand, closes it, lets you tap his hand, and then shows you that the ball has disappeared by opening his hand again. The way he sees it, the moment of magic is not the reveal of his empty hand, but rather, the moment just before he’s re-opened his hand—the moment you believe the ball has vanished.~~ I know what he means. I think we can all recognize that lift of our hearts when our belief has flapped its wings. “A thrill of hope” as the Christmas song says. It’s not just that something mysterious has happened outside of us; something has shifted inside us as well. We are a part of the mystery.~~ If magic- and indeed miracle, magic’s deep and truthful cousin- is so rooted in belief, what are we to do in a world as cynical as ours? What is it to believe in the face of real pain, real disappointment, real loss- in the face of day-in-and-day-out real life that feels so undecidedly un-magic?~~ That’s what Simon and Eve have to try to discover in this play. It’s what we all have to find out. We have to figure out how to open ourselves in the real world, in the painful, in the annoying, in the times we wish we could back away from other people who believe differently than we do, in the times when we think all is lost — in that millisecond before the magician’s hand opens, we have to seek to believe in each other and in things bigger than we are. Christmas comes to us at the very darkest moment of the year and whispers to us that something could be worth believing in, and against all our real world training and street smarts, we’ve got to lean into that. We’ve got to.~~ Katy Brown — Director, Wooden Snowflakes ~~ Cast & Credits CAST: Simon Whitaker: Andrew Hampton Livingston ~~ Eve Lawson: Kim Morgan Dean ~~ Voice–overs: Radio DJ and Jake: Rick McVey ~~ Rehearsal Assistant Stage Manager: Victoria L. The seasonal performance features imaginative arrangements of traditional and original carols, composed and led by Mayer and his ensemble of versatile musicians.~~ “The theme for this year’s Stars and Promises tour is ‘A Junkman’s Christmas,’ which comes from a memory of my father at Christmas who made the most of a forgotten present by weaving together widgets and fix-it objects so that I had another item under the tree,” said Peter Mayer, guitarist and singer for the Peter Mayer Group. “The holiday season is celebrated around the world in song, from concert halls to shopping malls, and we are honored to be a part of families’ yearly traditions as we begin our 19th year of holiday performances.”~~ Mayer is joined by a world class ensemble of musicians, featuring Chris Walters on piano (Bela Fleck, Alabama, J.D. Souther), Miles Vandiver on drums (Tom Kennedy, Ray Kennedy, Brian Owens), Mark Holland on native flute (Autumn’s Child, Oregon), Kristin Weber on violin and fiddle (Lorde, Kacey Musgraves, Lee Ann Womack), Brendan Mayer (guitarist, singer-songwriter, Mailboat recording artist) and Zeb Briskovich (Clark Terry, Grady Tate, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra) on bass. The night will feature a collection of timeless carols, original songs and stories, which celebrate the magical Christmas season when families come together from near and far to share gifts of peace, joy, faith and love. The world-class musical performance is accompanied by a beautiful stage production, lighting and pristine sound. The Stars and Promises tradition is a celebration of story and song that rings in the Christmas spirit.~~ The Peter Mayer Group has helped to raise thousands of dollars for communities throughout the United States that make a significant impact to local charities. 7. The Santaland Diaries (Nov 28) 28 days. Nov-28th to Dec-30th

     Wed, Nov 28th -  Arts & Culture 0
By David Sedaris ~~ Recommended for mature audience due to language and subject matter ~~ This outrageous holiday comedy stars Crumpet, a rebel without a Claus, who recounts his true-life tale of being an out-of-work writer doing a stint as a Macy’s department store elf. His encounters, as an Elf during the season of forced joy, have become a delightful cult classic for those in need of a holly-jolly antidote! A delightfully absurd look at the commercial Christmas season, Sedaris’ sharp and hilarious observations have rapidly become one of the nation’s most popular holiday shows. Barter’s production will feature one of Barter’s favorite actors, Nick Piper, as Crumpet. In Repertory with Wooden Snowflakes~~ Director's Notes The Santaland Diaries , Directors note ~~ Like most actors, I have had my share of survival jobs. Those jobs you do to pay the rent while you’re auditioning to get your “real” job in the theatre. Waitress, word processing, landscaper, sales person, hostess, factory worker, Elf. Yes, I was an Elf in Santaland at Macy’s in New York City.~~ The first time I read David Sedaris’s The Santaland Diaries , I was amazed at how incredibly accurate it was painting the picture of life in Santaland. Of course, his version was far more cynical than my own recollections and memories. I enjoyed being an Elf. After all, it was the holidays and it was sort of like acting. Well, not really, but I could tell myself that to stay sane. I remember the magic window, the huge tree, the snowy maze, being a pointer elf, a photo elf, a cashier elf, all of it. And like David Sedaris, by the time Christmas finally got here I was done with Christmas. Aren't we all?~~ It's easy to do, what with the crowds and the tempers and stress and lack of money and time. With all the commercialization of Christmas and Santa, we tend to forget what it's all really supposed to be about. Which is.... hmmm.... wait, I'll think of it. Well, anyway, I must have enjoyed my experience in Santaland because I came back another year and dressed up as a Christmas tree with two other trees and sang Christmas carols around the store. We were called the Christmas Tree-O, get it? And I was a Flower in the Flower Petal Trio at Easter for the Flower Show. Gee, I probably have just as many stories as David.~~ Thank you for taking time out of your busy holiday schedule to join us and share some Christmas cheer. I hope you enjoy your time in Santaland with Nick (not to be confused with St. Nick) and Crumpet. May it give you a good laugh and stir up some wonderful memories of your own crazy holiday seasons. Happy holidays, and the very best to you and yours in the coming New Year!~~ Cheers,~~ Tricia Matthews – Director, The Santaland Diaries ~~ Cast & Credits CAST: Crumpet: Nicholas Piper ~~ Rehearsal Assistant Stage Manager: Victoria L.      Fri, Nov 16th -   0
Book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin ~~ Music by Matthew Sklar Lyrics by Chad Beguelin ~~ Based upon the New Line Cinema film written by David Berenbaum ~~ A hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan who accidentally crawls into Santa’s bag and is taken back to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities force him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help remember the true meaning of Christmas. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.~~ Director's Notes The Elf-man Chronicles of Buddy, at Christmas. ~~ Christ·mas \"(‘krisməs)~~ noun ~~ 1.the annual Christian festival celebrating Christ's birth, held‪ on December 25in the Western Church.~~ exclamation ~~ 2. expressing dismay, despair, or surprise.~~ For our hero, BUDDY, the Elf, Christmas 2018 is going be unlike any other he’s had before. This one will be full of surprises . And as surprises often go, some will be great... and others, a little less great. In a matter of minutes, he will discover that his happy and syrup-filled life with Santa Claus has been based on a FIB! Buddy is not an ELF at all, but rather, j ust a human! And his real father works in publishing! whatever that is! So, Buddy embarks on a journey of self discovery, as only Buddy can.We can all identify with his search, full of longing for areal family. To feel the warm embrace of his father, to drink hot cocoa with his stepmom, and to snuggle with his newfound brother. From the snowy drifts of the North Pole to the bustling streets of New York City,Buddy swerves in and out of danger, bringing everyone he meets a proverbial gumdrop full of cheer.~~ And what about us, as we watch this musical from our comfortable seats? Are we capable of Buddy’s good cheer in the face of despair? Can we turn shock and dismay into joy and laughter with our own good nature and a few bars of Jingle Bells?~~ It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzied month of December, all the parties and shopping, the wrapping paper and ribbons. Let’s pause to reflect on the sparklejollyjingletwinkle y-ness of this wonderful life. Let’s learn from Buddy’s discovery. Let’s be inspired by this overgrown Elf-Man. Let’s cruise down Main Street, singing along with our own father, mother, kids, and grandkids. Let’s put our own innate and surprising abundance of sparklejollyjinkgletwinkl ey into this Christmas.
