A 17 year old Patrick Henry High School student has been arrested and charged for assault on a teacher.

According to Washington County Va. Sheriff Fred Newman, on October 10, 2018 at approximately 1:30 pm, Patrick Henry High School’s School Resource Officer Sergeant Robbie Cruise responded to a disturbance in the school. An 83 year old retired teacher was substituting in a class at the school when a 17 year old male student became agitated in class. When the substitute teacher handed him a piece of paper with the assignment on it the student became more agitated. The juvenile stood up and the teacher requested for him to sit back down. The student then proceeded to go around the teacher to leave the room, shoving the teacher backwards in the process. The teacher fell backwards, hitting his head on the teacher’s desk resulting in him having staples and internal bleeding. The teacher was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center where he is currently in intensive care.

The 17 year old male was charged with malicious wounding, he was transported to Highlands Detention Center where he is being held.

“Winner of Barter’s 2018 Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights.” ~~ Recommended for mature audience due to language and subject matter ~~ By Alice Stanley ~~ In the midst of the first gruesomely violent event of the legendary Hatfield and McCoy feud, one woman does what she must to save her family. Sally McCoy tells a harrowing and deeply personal story which takes a hard look at how women’s stories and perspectives are too often excluded from our historical narratives. Set in August 1882, Sally’s three eldest sons are captured by the Hatfield clan. Sally defies her womanly place in the home and crosses miles of Appalachian wilderness in the dark of night to save her children from certain death at the vengeful hands of the Hatfields. After traveling all those miles alone, she arrives at the home of the Hatfield patriarch, “Devil” Anse Hatfield, and refuses to let anything stand in her way until she has seen the “Devil” face to face.~~ SPECIAL TALKBACKS:~~ October 6th: 4 Hatfield/ McCoy family members, the director, and some of the cast~~ October 12th: Neil Warren (historian), the director, and some of the cast~~ October 26-28th: Alice Stanley (the playwright) and some of the cast~~ Director's Notes We all know something or other about the epic feud between the Hatfields and McCoys. It is the stuff of American legend- a tribal tale of bloody vengeance that endured for the last 30 years of the 19th century. Maybe this particular feud sticks in the American psyche because it has all the elements of Shakespearean tragedy: family honor, betrayal, bloodlust, star-crossed lovers, and of course, a stolen pig. It was not nearly the bloodiest feud taking place in our young country at the time, but it would capture the imagination of historians and laymen alike, earning the Tug Fork River region the nickname “Murderland”. Ultimately, these two families believed in their own clan, no matter what, kinfolk above all else. And we need only watch five minutes of the evening news to see that this same mentality burns brightly, even today.~~ Our play is set smack dab in the middle of these violent times, as Sally is surrounded by quick tempered men armed with guns, knives, and their blind hatred of “others” that colored every moment of her life. It does not dwell on big sweeping thoughts of social order, nor the decades of infighting that lead up to this dark night. Rather, it concerns itself with strength and fortitude, the incomparable bond, and resolute convictions of a mother’s love. At a time when wives and daughters were the slaves of the poorest families, who could expect such a woman to be brave? And who would allow her to speak her mind?~~ Family was on Sally McCoy’s mind one night in 1882, as she made her way through the dark and treacherous woods to the old Hatfield home. Family. Her boys. Her everything. It would take epic courage to make this journey, to tiptoe across that threshold, to open her mouth, use her voice, and show her hand. Our Sally is a heroine ahead of her time, speaking truth to power; the consequences be damned.~~ Susanne Boulle~~ Director, Sally McCoy ~~ Cast & Credits Cast: Sally McCoy: Tricia Matthews ~~ Devil Anse Hatfield: Michael Poisson ~~ Valentine Hatfield, Anse’s Brother: Nicholas Piper ~~ Johnse Hatfield, Anse’s Son: Shaan Sharma ~~ Cap Hatfield, Anse’s Son: Rusty Allen ~~ Rehearsal AssistantStage Manager: Victoria L. It doesn’t matter if the teacher stood in front of him or not. You LISTEN to your substitute teacher and have RESPECT. You also don’t put hands on an elderly man!!
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
Guys don't be so quick to judge in the statement it says the guy tried to leave .it sounds like the teacher inserted himself in the young man's way .now sorry the teacher was hurt but I don't think that was the intent .....just saying

Charge this punk as an adult and put him away ! There is no respect for law or others by these gutter rats !
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
What a punk. He evidently wasn't taught any better at home. He and his parents need to be taken out behind the woodshed and given a good old fashioned whooping.
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
It says he went around the teacher to leave shoving him in the process, doesnt say teacher got in his way. No reason to put his hands on the sub. If I was the subs family prosecute to fullest extent of law. Little bit of jail time might stop this kid from doing something worse later.
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
He should be charged as an adult. There is no reason to put your hands on anyone. So the young man was in the wrong in my opinion. Hoping the teacher is ok.

So sad ! Discipline and respect starts at home !
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
He is a 17 year old punk who had no respect for his Elder regardless of who said what stop making excuses for him and trying to justify his stupidity he deserves everything he gets

A trial as an adult may do this young man some good ! Prayers for the teacher🙏

Kids these days have it to easy. Bring back corporal punishment and things will change. There's to much babying kids these days. Prayers for the sub teacher my heart goes out to him and his family.
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
Praying for the teacher. God knows they dont get paid enough for what they put up with.
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
I agree punishment to the fullest extent of the law allowed. Then make his parents pay all the medical bills. That's what's wrong with kids today no morals or stern hands like we had growing up. I believe the parents should be prosecuted as well

Some of these young people have zero respect for anything and have no boundaries as to how they should act! This country will soon be in crisis, already are to get substitutes, to get young teachers in this profession. Pay and conditions can't compete with other industries! When you add all of the things we are tasked to do and deal with daily, actual teaching takes a back seat!
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
Prayers for both. Young adults need to realize that there are consequences for all behaviors and that social standards/laws exist for a reason.
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
That's what's wrong with some of these young people they have no respect for their teachers, others students. I think he should do time and his parents should pay for the teachers Bill's and whatever he needs. But you no what's sad this student will probably never learn his lesson and keep in doing what he us doing.

Breaks my heart the teacher is such a sweet man, and the boy need to get what he deserves there no sense in this kind of stuff
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
Lots of assumptions made on this thread... he’s being held, he’s been charged, let the case unfold. Man, people are rabid these days.
Friday, October 12th, 2018
Prayers for the teacher to be healed i dont know what is going on with some of our youth they have no respect for anyone we were taught so different i knew better to hit or talk back to a teacher and certainly not shove a elderly person i do pray they see if this young man needs some profeesional help people spoil their children so much today dont give them any chores to do everyday spent time with them talking see whst they are doing on their computer and parents need to be a good example for them and above all the whole family needs to go to church and serve the Lord
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
We respected our teachers and subs. Kids now r not taught respect. They think this world owes them something. I substituted for a while. But I could not do it. My children r 27 and 24 and still says respect the adults. Says yes and thank you. Will hold the doors for them. No excuse for this. I know some 90 year olds who still drive and r very with it. Just because he is 83 doesn’t mean he should not do what he loves. Prayer 🙏 for all involved including the others in room

Thursday, October 11th, 2018
Prayers for the injured teacher- bless him for trying to make a positive difference - (and I am Sure he does to many) this press release is heartbreaking to read-
Friday, October 12th, 2018
My grandson attends there as a senior, and his account of the story matches whats being reported. Sooo, . . . Plus the boy who did the assaulting, for whatever reasons, has some serious issues. What the boy did was wrong. Period. Needs to be held accountable instead of made excuses for. Theres NO excuse for a student to disrespect and shove, hit, or disobey instructions, argue, or whatever. Thats one thing wrong with youth today. No discipline at home. Schools arent allowed to discipline. So things like this is what we get.
Thursday, October 11th, 2018
Prayers that the sub. will be ok. Poor guy is probably supplementing his income to make it in the times we are living. Health insurance and supplements can alot from senior citizens. Maybe the kid will get a wake up call and take a different path.
