March 2 1776 General Washington ordered the cannons to begin bombarding British lines in occupied Boston as a decoy while the main artillery was secretly moved to a point overlooking the city at Dorchester heights.
March 2 1781 The Battle of Clapps Mill, NC. Patriot forces under Col. Henry Lee, local militiamen and Catawba Indian allies surprised the Loyalist mounted cavalry of Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton. After the initial surprise the ambush failed and Lee’s troops retreated. Most importantly the attack caused a change in course for the British troops and indirectly led to the battle of Guilford Courthouse 13 days later.
